  1. Tomi's year in media 2025

Here’s some things I enjoyed in 2025 Books: Read 32 books (academic text not included) The one that stuck out and the only one I gave five stars at Storygraph : Johannes Anyuru: De kommer att drunkna i sina mödrars tårar - Truly touching tale of racism, immigration, terrorism and the Nordic welfare society being transformed into a fascist regime. The detective book trio 1. Richard Osman: The Impossible Fortune, A Thursday Murder Club Mystery #5 - Did not disappoint! 2. Cosy crime: Mord under solen series by Anders de la Motte, and Anette de la Motte. - Italian landscape,…

  2. Book review: Audiovisual Disruption: Post-Digital Aesthetics in Contemporary Audiovisual Arts

Disclaimer: The publisher was sent to me by the publisher. Audiovisual Disruption: Post-Digital Aesthetics in Contemporary Audiovisual Arts offers a compelling exploration of the post-digital, providing a solid theoretical and practical foundation for understanding this critical concept. By situating the post-digital not as a mere chronological marker after digitalisation but as an entangled condition where digital, analogue, and material practices coexist, the book establishes itself as an essential resource for scholars and practitioners alike. Its initial chapters present a nuanced overview of the post-digital, making complex ideas accessible while laying the groundwork for the more specific focus on artistic practices…

  4. AI MIXEI?!

What colonialism does is cause an identity crisis about one's own culture. Lupita Nyong'o Colonialism is the cousin of slavery. Chadwick Boseman K eskustelu koneoppivista algoritmeista (esim. TLDR; Ai miksei AI, no koska se on epäeettistä…

  5. NO! My data can not be used to train AI models!

There has been rapid development in machine learning models recently. The scientific achievements are in many ways impressive and valuable (Gupta et al., 2022; Ardila et al., 2019). However, some of the development has been more focused on commerce, i.e. selling different products based on these trained models. Lensa AI , for instance, is a smartphone app that creates AI images based on your selfie. They sell ”magic avatar packs ” for 5€ and also require membership. Other similar image-alteration or text-to-image products ask for equal payments, and some stock image banks have started selling AI-generated images. Even though a…

  6. Digital ”äger rum”: om den post-digitala världen

Tomi Slotte Dufva: Hej = Hello. From Drawing a Day series: https://drawing.plumbing Idag är det Svenska dagen. Därför tänkte jag skriva ett blogginlägg på svenska. Today we celebrate Finnish Swedish Heritage day and to join the celebrations I wrote a little piece in Swedish.

  7. AI, Cows and earthworms, with holiday book recommendations!

In a recent episode of Finnish podcast Herrasmieshakkerit (Gentleman hackers) , there was an interview with Arttu Lehmuskallio, the head of Finnish National Cyber Security Centre, who briefly discussed how cows have about five computers each. As I am sitting and writing this with my laptop and only have two other computing devices with me (my clock and my phone), I am feeling a bit jealous. Whether the cows surf the Intermoo or watch the Cowflix or not, this bit of information goes to show how digital processes envelop even the picturesque image of a pure countryside and the milking…

  8. The Death of AI art

From: Tomi Slotte Dufva Subject: The Death of AI Art Format: A̶S̶C̶I̶I̶ HTML+js+god nows what the webpages use these days Average Reading Time:Time will tell. Signal to Noise Ratio: Only known by algorithms Rating: adult Genre: provocation (copycat) The recent trend with technology is to bet heavily on Artificial Intelligence. From automating tiresome factory jobs, AI is now moving into more cognition demanding jobs. Not only truck or taxi drivers are threatened, but doctors, nurses, and many others as well. Similarly, art and design worlds are preparing for the new intelligent era. Behind these near-future visions lies a plethora of…

  9. The traveller of two worlds: a led-candle

The other day I was sitting in a sauna* looking at a led-candle. It was the only flickering light in the darkening evening. At first, I didn’t give it too much attention: it flickered and provided a relaxing atmosphere. Then I started looking at the flickering, it was a bit random, not too much unlike the flickering of a real candle. Suddenly, I felt a slight breeze of cold air coming through the window and noticed that the led-candle did not react to it, but kept that same rhythm of random light flickering. At that point, it struck me. This…

  10. Being digital

From my drawing blog. This post was inspired by two articles I read recently. I Highly prompt you to read them. I Am Capital by Hannes Grassegger The Data That Turned the World Upside Down by Hannes Grassegger & Mikael Krogerus For a while now, my research on creative coding has become increasingly focused on the ways we perceive and experience digitality -or the lack thereof. One of my initial research premises was that the increasing digitalization could lead to a new kind of digital divide. Previously digital divide has referred to the divide between those who have access to…

  11. The meaning of life without work

”The meaning of life in a world without work” http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/may/08/virtual-reality-religion-robots-sapiens-book In one way this is an intriquing article. It gives another perspective to the discussion on AI and jobs. But there are some things I, myself, am bothered with. I am bothered by the way the article gives the impression of technology as an unstoppable force: As something, we have no way of altering. Such naivete shouldn’t exist anymore. Inventions and technologies are always political and shaped by the current dominant positions. Then, related is a diminished understanding of religions and even meaning of life. In someway I feel this…
