  1. Vernissage today 21.10 at 7pm, welcome!

Exhibition at Gallerie Pleiku: Tomi Slotte Dufva: Beer as Material and Landscape I like beer. I am not alone – around 177.5 million kiloliters of beer are consumed worldwide each year. In Finland, the average annual consumption is approximately 72 litres per person – a considerable amount, yet only half of the impressive 184 litres per capita consumed in the Czech Republic. Beer is one of humanity’s oldest beverages, with a history stretching back thousands of years. The word “beer” derives from Germanic languages (bier, birra) and is connected to the Latin verb bibere, meaning “to drink.” In ancient Egypt,…

  2. Brewday: Pilsner 🍺🍺

At last, it's time to tackle the first brew with the new system. I pondered a great deal about what kind of lager to brew, a smoky Bamberg-style proto-lager, a replica of some large macro-beer, like Heineken or Carlsberg? A Budweiser? A more modern take with American-style hops? A Bock? A dubbel Bock? Marzen or Octoberfest beer? Mexican? Vietnamese? Chinese? Japanese? The possibilities within lager are endless. Lager beers are fascinating as they have echoed or played a part in forming early 20th-century industrialisation and post-second World War globalisation. Although there is no beer called lager, instead, it is a whole style of beer, more similar to Ales than to a distinct beer, like the now ubiquitous IPA. Lager beer styles By most accounts, the first lager Beer originated from Bavaria in…

  4. Biber, Alus, Kalya and Beor - Beer as material and landscape.

I am thrilled to announce my forthcoming artistic project, made possible by a lovely grant from Svenska Kulturfonden (Thank you!). In the project, I will focus on beer, beer’s agency and materiality. This will be done through brewing and painting with beer! I like beer. And I'm not alone, as an estimated 177.5 million kiloliters of beer are consumed worldwide each year. In Finland, beer consumption is estimated at 72 litres per year per person, which is a lot, but still less than in the Czech Republic, where beer is consumed the most (161 litres per person). A rose by…
